ordering shrimp

just about anything will eat them

betta may or may not eat them. i tell people is to set up a shrimp only tank. this way they dont become a snack. as they start to breed then move them over. this way you will always have a supply to move over to the other tanks.

the betta thing is empty because i thought it was mean to keep anything in such a small tank. i'm going to take the pleco and the tetras out and put them into some of my other tanks. i don't think the kuhli's will bug them cause they never come out. i'd love to go to petsmart and get a 10g for $10 but we don't have anything like that here. just walmart and 3 petshops but a new ten g will cost me about $60 plus tax to set up.

Walmart sometimes carries a 10g tank for $10-15. That is for a tank only, no filter, hood, or substrate is included. You can get a sponge filter, and an air pump for around $30, or just get a cheap pump and make a sponge filter. Good instructions to make them are available online (google DIY sponge filter, or search the DIY forum here, if you're interested.

Shrimp tanks really don't need much substrate. Just enough to lightly cover the bottom is enough to support the beneficial bacteria, to keep the tank cycled. Then add some cheap plants as time goes by. That will provide more surface area for bacteria, and more places for the young shrimp to perch and hide.

:headshake2: so...i decided to put off getting the shrimp like a responsible pet owner until i can provide them with the best possible home for them. which is apparently not in my tank:wall:...boo hoo...i've been sulking all day but i suppose it will be worth the wait when i have it all set up perfect for them. now i just have to convince hubby that it's okay to get yet another set-up and buy a new stand for my 50g so i can have some cupboard space to put other tanks....it's a good thing this house is enormous or i'd have no room left for the kids...lol

I have rcs in a planted 20g long with small mouthed fish: threadfin rainbows, micros rasboras, galaxy rasboras (CPD), & snails. I only recently found juvenile shrimp although the adults don't hide. I'm sure some babies must get eaten.

I think if you got as many as 30 you could put some in a couple tanks without risking very many, java moss really helps. Up to you of course, they are much more entertaining than I had thought possible.
