Are the organisms that live in LS and provide bio-filtration the same organisms that live in LR? Or are there some of the same on both?

I am curious if "dead" rock could be seeded from LS without cured LR.
this is practical, but you could maintain a tank with a huge DSB without having LR for filtration?

One other thing, are silicates acceptable in LS, if you have a FOWLR tank?

thats a good "?" i vote on the same, and yes to the silacates.

To some extent they are the same but I think there are some different "bugs" that live in one or the other.

from what i have found in samples form my own aquariums is that much more came out of the refugum mud and rocks vs the sand. as Jojo said they are similar but a bit different...ive noticed there is more abundance in the places that are more nutrient rich. i personally wouldnt want silicates at all due to the effects they have but it can work out in FOWLR.
