I have found little information on this odd fish, how big does it get, whats there comptability with other tankmates,I would also like to know the groth rate of one of these in a 30 gal. Can any one help me with Questions about the Ornate Bichir? and also whats with freshwater flounders, I saw one for the first time the other day at my LFS are they rare?

You need a minimum of a 75 gallon to keep a Polypterus ornatipinnis they can reach
18-24 inches tankmates need to be big also to avoid being a meal-Anne

you cannot keep piranhas OR bichirs in a 30G tank. please do not listen to your LFS. they are lying to try and get your money. listen to us. I think if you still want one smart fish you would be best off with a fancy goldfish by itself in your 30G tank.

they can grow to and over 24", but i believe in captivity they get around the 18" mark.

i talked with my neighbor who keeps these and he said compatible tank mate are knifefish and cichlids. and they will fight or eat each other if you keep on or more. he alos said nothing smaller then a 75 gallon... so if you do put it in the 30, plan to get a bigger tank soon enough
