Oscar and Clown Loach and... ?

My clown loaches are in a 90 gallon because I am following the advice that is recommended method of raising them from the great people at www.loaches.com. Recommended care for the clown loach can be found here:

There is no need to make a personal attack; I never said that clown loaches could not be kept in 130 gallon aquarium; I said that they could not be housed long term with an oscar and other fish. Size is not the only issue; between the loaches and the oscar enough waste will be produced that 130 aquarium will not support the bio-load of these fish long term. Adding more fish will only result in the need to upgrade sooner. I understand the needs of my loaches and have both the commitment and the resources to upgrade as soon as is necessary. This is not the case for everyone so I just wanted to make sure that the original poster knowns what will need to be done.

Very well spoken, Bravo.:thm:

Why not? Original poster indicated 1 oscar, but not how many loaches he's planning. 130g's is plenty big to support the bio-load of an adult oscar and an appropriate size group of growing loaches (i.e. 5 or so). I'd even put a GT in there. It's the design of the filtration that's going to determine whether or not it will work.

With that, what is your filtration setup like Ave?

thank you for the replys.
my filter is JBL Cristal Profi 500 (1200 l/h=ca 300 g/h). I realize that this might not be powerful enough and we need to replace it or add another.
What also concerns me is that maybe the Oscar keeps rearranging the tank the way that the loaches will not feel comfortable? And also that maybe the loaches will not offer the Oscar enough company and the Oscar get bored? (that's why I'm considering the dither fish). The compatibility charts say that they match and I already got so fond of the idea of these fishes , now it's hard to decide which ones to give up now...

The filter definitely will not be adequate. Look into a good wet dry filter or maybe the FX5 or something. Oscar's are extremely messy and will appreciate over filtration (is there such a thing with Oscars?).

As for company for the oscars I house mine with a green terror and they get along fine, they even swim together. Just don't add another oscar. I've never other dither fish so I can't speak on them.

I wouldn't worry about the oscar making the loaches uncomfortable... as long as they have a good sturdy place to hide (i.e. cave or driftwood with a hole in it) they'll be okay.

You are going to need lots more filtration however. But you seem aware of it.

I also wouldn't worry about the oscar becoming bored, because you can provide him with the interraction and stimulus that will keep him happy. You can try rearranging decor once in a while, etc...

So, you don't really need dither fish.
