oscar and jack dempsey cichlid help

It would REALLY be pushing it, and for the health of those fish, you would NEED to keep up on water changes and testing, but you probably could get away with having those two in a 50 if you have to. Keep in mind that when it is full grown, the oscar won't have a lot of room to move. It'll probably have about three times it's body length, and BARELY enough room to turn around.

In a fifty I would say only keep the Jack Dempsey. I recently posted a thread and I plan on have a breedin pair of JD's in my 55gal as soon as I get my 125gal for my other cichlids.

Oscars get really big and even though some say a 55gal is ok for a single oscar I wouldnt put one in less then a 75gal. If a 50gal is the biggest u could get then you should start saying buy to your Oscar.

Weekly water changes are need but seeing how you have a Jack Dempsey and a Oscar in a 10gal you should be cleaning it way more often.

I highly reccomend getting a good liquid test kit (and using it!). API makes a fairly good one that runs about $20-30. It seems like a lot, but the kit lasts almost forever. It is called the 'freshwater master test kit' or something along those lines. Make sure you get a test for ammonia, nitrITE, and nitrATE at the very minimum. You should test at least weekly, and do water changes at least weekly. If you are doing weekly water changes, I would reccomend somewhere between 25% and 50%. Also, make sure you use a tap water conditioner (like aquasafe, API Stress Coat +, or Seacheme Prime - I reccomend the Prime) that removes chlorine and chloramine whenever you add water.

What kind of filter is on the 10 gallon tank? I ask because it will be important when you upgrade.

Yup API Freshwater Master Test Kit is something you should invest in and water changes in a 50gal should be 50% weekly minimum when these fish get full grown in a 50gal. Oscars are poop machines.

Java Fern. Java Moss. Anubias. Marimo. Floating Anacharis. Floating Pennywort.

These are all low light plants that can't get dug up.

But, that does bring up a good point. I believe that an oscar will be happier with a sand substrate. Something to keep in mind when you upgrade.

U ever own an oscar before Hebily??? Not trying to insult your intelligence but all oscars ive owned have dug up gravel till the was two hills on the sides of the tank and the middle was bare. Mine use to have fake plants and they always got barried

No, I haven't owned an Oscar yet. I am only relaying what I have learned through research, and from my wife, who's parents kept an oscar when she was a child.
