I brought home a few small plecos today and one of our small Albino Oscars ate one whole! The pleco was almost as long as the Oscar.

I had no idea an Oscar would eat a Pleco! It really upset my wife... she watched it happen and freaked out. We never feed our cichlids live food. :shake:

Anyone else ever have this happen?

If they can fit it into their mouth then they will eat it. You have to be careful what you add with oscars and make sure that the tankmates are big enough they won't get eaten.

I would return the rest of the plecos and if you need to get another pleco try to get a already full grown one.

ps: you should be careful about oscars eating plecos as they have spines that if eaten can get stuck in the oscars throat. There is a post about a severum and a cory, same thign can happen with plecos.

Hi Valerie,

Thanks for your reply. I've kept Oscars for years and never had one bother a pleco, that is why I'm so surprised. The Oscar and Pleco in question are/were less than three inches long. I had just dropped the pleco into the tank and it was on it's way to the bottom when it happened.

Well.... The missing Pleco turned up today and is still alive. Much of it's tail is gone, but I guess the Oscar could not digest it.
