Can an oscar survive in a 55 g or do I need to put him in something larger like a 75 g or a 90 g

Some will not agree with me on this, but yes an Oscar will be fine in a 55. There is a stipulation to that however. You can't have any other fish in there. The 55 you have set up with the Tiger Oscar is not going to work with those other fish in there.

I agree whole heartedly.

I am going to disagree, COMPLETELY.

A 55g is only 12'' wide, oscars usually get in the 13'' range. Therefore, he/she cannot turn around comfortably as an adult, and in turn, would not be housed properly.

Can he survive? Yes. Is it good for him? No. If you can get a 75g or any tank that is 50g or more that is at least 18'' wide (50g breeder for example), then do it. Your oscar will be happier in the long run.

"Fine" quite frankly, is a relative term, which I've said before. My oscars (before I knew better) were 8'' each and in a 20g... they were "fine," they ate and were healthy. I got them a bigger tank, and boom, they were spectacular and in excellent health.

Wow not much to say but they're right. I'll say that personally if you can afford it get as big of a tank as possible from the get go. That away you can put other fish with him if you choose, and it's alot easier to buy a big setup first than to waste money on a small tank and then have to shell out money again for something bigger.

55s aren't suitable for oscars for the reasons puma listed.

75s however are again because of what puma said.

A 75 would allow you to keep a mated pair together. When choosing tanks for any fish they should be looked at with the adult size of the fish in mind. Getting as close to 1.5 times the length of the fish for a width is one thing you should really look at. Make it a comfortable environment for the fish to live in, think of it as only having the width of your body, to turn around in, how comfortable would that really be?
