I have two oscars both pretty young... one about 4 inches and the other 3
they used to fight but now seem to have paired up... they swim together and roll around on each other and have seen them lip lock.
However... both of them look like they've been injured... they both have places on them where their scales are peeling off or missing... but they don't seem to have the same marks as when they were fighting... most noticeably their fins aren't ripped or torn.
Any ideas whats causing it?
and they are the only two fish in the tank

what size tank? have you tested your water? nitritaes, nitrites, ammonia, ph? I think oscar and angels are the same in the the more domanant one will pick on the lesser. Because there is no other fish in the tnk your one oscar doesn't have anyone else to vent on.

Another thing is you could be lucky and having a pair m/f. but the one might not be ready to mate. hence the beatings. Its ither a dominace fight or a breeding fight either way unless the tank isn't at least a 75 or a 90 you will need one that size to keep the oscars health and happy.

I'll second the tank reccomendation, a pair of oscars should be kept in at least a 75. The wounds could be where they have scrapped themselves against decorations, or simply just been squabling. If they don't heal up or get infected I'd start to get worried, but untill something else happens don't worry to much. The lip locking is a big sign of pairing behavior with oscars, especially if they are constantly together.

I had an Oscar 12 & 1/2" and two smaller oscars 3 or 4' and about a week ago the big boy jumped out of the tnak thru the glass top and the flourescent light, and onto the floor (the third time) but this was his last, not able to save him this time! And last night or early this morning one of the smaller ones jumped out. I was able to save hime barely, he's rough at the moment. I don't have a clue why? Anyone Know? I thought maybe the heater light going on. I turned it around so the light was hid by the bracket. I do have a Aquaclear 800 for water movement, helps keep ammonia down a little more. Help if you will. Thanks in advance!

Jumpers And What's Beyond The Glass

I really would like to see a situation where my fish can swim where ever they wanted to in my home,... well why do fish jump out of their tanks? Are they trying to get out on purpose? I have 2 oscars both are over 10+ inches and 1 Red Devil in a seperate tank. The oscars do not mate, but DO lip lock, although this is only a fight to see who's jaw is stronger. They get very angry and one now has a crooked jaw from not just ramming the glass at a human face, but jaw locking with his/her other Oscar tank mate. In this 75 Gal tank, I had 3 Oscars, and 1 jumped out. I could not save this fish because it happend late at night. And even though I heard a loud splash and commotion, I was tired/lazy didn't check on them, so he dried up during the night. And I didn't have 3 fish in the morning. :( Long story short, make sure your lids are well seated with a very heavy lighting device or something with some kind of weight. These fish are strong. THey splash and roll and fight together very aggresively.

Currently my Red Devil is stuck in a tiny tank for his size. The fish clearly does not agree with its living conditions as it makes this well known by staying completely vertical for several seconds then when you don't look or pay any attention to him, he blasts to the top and rams the 20 Gal plastic tank lid. He's a much more entertaining fish than the oscars, like a dolphin sometimes. But I won't say either of them have more personality than the other. I'd just try to weigh everything down or secure your lids with plastic clips. There are ways if your fish are being testy as mine like to. The Red Devil is now ramming the lid to wake me up if I sleep on the couch also. :(

Its becoming quite the neusance as I search for a 100+ gal tank for him and the 2 oscars. I'm thinking if I don't keep this lid weighed down, he's going to fly through it.

My tank is 110g tall. The two that are left seem to get along very well. Haven't noticed any fighting!
