so i was trying to check my girls oscars sexual organs and he has covered in this slim like sticky stuff, now i know fish are supposed to have a natural slim but he was really slimy, i just checked my jack dempseys for there sexual organs and they werent sticky like this, i had layed him on a rag and he literly stuck to it, he seems to be doing fine but anyone able to give me some info on this.

Oscars dont got scales like a normal fish or so ive read. I think that and them having a softer touch when handled is what had got them the name Velvet Fish way back in the day b4 i was born. Why they are like this and there benifits I dont know. But yeah all Oscars are extra slimey just like all pleco's are non slimey and for the most part feel rough

i think that by taking the fish out of the water and laying it on the towel you most likely caused it to secrete more 'slime' due to stress. as far as i know all fish have some sort of slime coating on their bodies and fins and when under stress they make more of it.

i have on occasion, touched my oscar's body with the tip of my finger and he does not seem overly 'slimy'. no more than any other of my fish would.

is there anything going on in the tank that would create more stress for this oscar? or has there been anything in the recent past that this fish is recovering from?

he got beat up by some of there other fish and hes healing, i figured thats what it is but still had to ask. he dosent get picked on anymore by there other fish. and i just added some aquarium salt to help his wounds.

i wouldn't use salt to 'help' his wounds. just increase your frequency and volume of water changes. the salt is most likely what is causing the oscar to be more slimy, as it is an irritant that causes the fish to produce more slime coat.

Salt for a wound??? OUCH ever put salt on your own wounds Ive heard it hurts. I think Melafix would be better for healing wounds just for future reference.

BFM Ever pet the side over your oscar and another fish like a goldfish right after??? Oscars are slightly slimeyer (spellin sucks sorry) pluse oscars feel smooth use to love how my oscar felt lol. Who ever said you cant pet a fish?

Melafix and Pimafix are good to always have on hand d1anonly22. Just keep em out of the sunlight as this make them worthless.

yep, GER, i've 'petted' my oscar a couple times, lol. i don't make a habit of it though due to the disturbance to the slime coat and that is not good for fish. can't say my other fish allow me the same 'pleasantries', lol. he (oscar) feels softer than any other fish i've ever touched, but no slimier than others.

if the wounds on this oscar in question are healing well and are not deep or long, i would simply keep up with an increased water change schedule and not dose any meds. then again, i am one of those finkid keepers that prefers to not use meds unless absolutely neccessary.

Yeah Oscars are very tough fish in my experience and Ive never needed to treat with meds with the one exception when mine had gotten Ich. Clean water is all he/she should need for now.

Though there is no scientific evidence of salt healing wounds I am a believer it does. More water changes will definately help but the addition of salt will help too. I have had a Green terror with a split tail for almost a year, I figured it was permanent. Anyway there was ICH in this tank so I treated with salt 2 tsp per gallon. I kept that concentration in there for two months....By the time I quit adding salt the tail fin of that GT was completley healed. Therfore I believe the salt does heal wounds IME.Not sure about the extra slime coat but if the Oscar is already beat up it is not a good idea to remove him from the water for observation it will just add to the stress. Oscars are prone to secondary infections esp. if stress related.

Aquarium Salt, or Table Salt are EXCELLENT ways to releive stress and heal wounds.. I use it religiously and hardly EVER lose a fish.. I have been using it for years and will continue because I have good luck with it
