Oscar with hole in the Head

"Fish fed exclusively or largely a diet of feeder fish are extremely likely to develop HITH. They are also in high risk of contracting other diseases, such as ich, numerous other parasites, or fungal infections. It is important to resist the urge to watch your fish chase their food, it is for their own good."

taken directly from that same article.

Feeding live food OCCASIONALLY does not CAUSE HITH. However, feeding live foods PRIMARILY (key word here) is CONDUCIVE to contracting HITH, as is ANY OTHER diet deficient in vitamins and essential nutrients.

that almost looks like an injury, not HITH, but they are sometimes hard to distinguish.

No, it's not an injury.. it started as a small spot a month and a half ago (when I got him) and has gotten a little bigger since. No tankmates or dangerous decorations.

Have you considered secondary bacterial infection?
pretty common in the aftermath of disease, infestation and or infections.

I haven't noticed any growths on the "crater".. no redness or anything.. does it not look like HITH? I've seen plenty of pictures online that look like that. Does it look more like a bacerial infection than HITH? Should I use melafix? or wait until the hex-out treatment?

I'd just keep up with the metro, and water changes...it worked when my chocolate cichlid had HITH (as well as other internal parasite issues)

Well I started adding melafix today... couldn't find anything about whether it was ok to use with metronidazole, but figured it was worth a shot.

metronidazole is actually an anti parasite med. it is used to control some species of internal worms as well as protozoa( on form of protozoa is hexamita.)
.
hex out is just a brand name for metronidazole.

The med is not affected by pimafix or melafix..sometimes it is recommended to use a med to help fight secondary bacterial issues.

btw, the theory about the difference in the appearance of HITH and HLLE is the shape of the wound. they can affect lateral i line and or head area.
the good thing is many oscars seem to survive with maybe some scarring.
