last week I found one of my oscars out side the tank. it was too late and was all dried up. but do oscars jump out of tanks, I only had 2 oscars and a pleco at the time when that happend. they all seemed to get along just fine. also, what about crikects for fish, are they bad or good.

Oscars are not usually advertised as a jumper, but they do it sometimes ( as will alot of fish that aren't advertised as jumpers), I had a friend who paid big bucks for a matched breeding pair and then had the female jump out one night and die. Sometimes I think their natural curiosity causes them to try to go over there and look at that lamp thingy on the end table. Either way. I learned long ago that it is safer with any fish to keep a cover on the tank that they can't get through. I used to train my O's to do jumping tricks, and every now and then one would jump at me before the tank lid was open. I always figured that was my fault though.
I have an O that is quite the jumper. He once jumped out of the tank when my hubby went to feed him. He is quite the chow hound and gets very excited at feeding times. You'de think he never got fed. (the fish ...not the hubby...)
On that particular occasion, he leaped out of the tank as soon as my hubby lifted the cover to the tank. He landed on the floor, 4.5 ft down. The hubby was shocked (to say the least... in having a 6 inch fish hurl itself at him.) Within a few moments, the fish was scooped up and dropped back in the tank. He dropped to the bottom and bounced back to the surface to continue his begging dance. It was if it never happened.
Since then, he has bashed his head in to the top glass more than once.....usually when he is very excited.
I'm considering putting some padding on it.

my old oscar always was lunging at my hood, and I have heard of other oscars doint the same thing. They are a very curiouse fish, and if they see something, like water dripping from the hood or something, they feal obligated to check it out. I am sorry to hear that this happened to you though.:sad
It was about a year ago that I had 2 tiger oscars, about 4" each in my 100g. Anyway, I came downstairs late one night and saw a black spot on the floor by the tank with the lid up. Upon further inspection, I found one of my oscars dryed up and motionless. Wasn't even gasping for breath. I tossed him into my q-tank and he floated belly up. But I had this strange feeling inside me, so I left him in overnight. The next morning I found him swimming again! A little slowly but he was alive.
Also, every time I put my hand over the tank to feed them, they jump completely out of the water trying to snatch the food out of my hand.
I don't know if all oscars have a reputation for jumping, but if anybody tries to tell me they don't, I'd have to refute.

I had an oscar that was always curious. Occasionally he would hit the canopy going after a waterdrip but never jumped out thank goodness.
well thanks eveeryone. at least I know nothing odd was happening. next purchase will be a lid/cover for it. then next is to save for a bigger tank.
