Oscars hiding

Be sure to keep an eye on your water quality. I had one of my Oscars go timid after he had been in the tank a couple of months, and had been very active. I found that I had PH problems. Fixed the problems, and fixed the fish. Also, female Oscars tend to be slightly more timid than the males, in my expiences with them. Good luck.

That is part of the problem. Young fish are always skittish, but if they are in high traffic areas most of the larger cichlids get used to seeing people and realize they don't have to be scared aslong as these are the types of people that like to knock on the glass and stuff. When there isn't a lot of traffic, the get to be like puppies who aren't well socialized and remian nervous.

I would second that. My new tank is in the basement office, and with me being gone most of the time, the fish never see a human except on weekends. they are the shyest fish I've ever had. I thought about getting a few life size cardboard cutouts and putting in front of the tank.

It is not practical or possible to move that 55 gallon tank at this point in time. However I do go into the room 2-4 times a day.

In terms of water movement I have a Whisper 30-60 (Wal-Mart model) and a Magnum 350** with a Biowheel pro 60 on it as filters. (**The Magnum's actual pump assembly is gone, I had to use a powerhead that I had laying around to drive it. Therefore the flow rate is unknown.)
