Hi, iv decided to make my tank an oscar one so iv purchased 2 two inch oscars, a red tiger and a copper oscar. I heard oscars have a personality and learn to recognize the person who feeds them. I also heard they love rearranging the tank decor. Is it advisable to maintain a planted tank or do i get rid of the plants. They seem to be quite laidback & calm. Will they co-exist with a three inch flowerhorn. At present i have the flowerhorn in a separate tank with a small pleco.:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Tank size is key here like jm is getting at.

I'm proud to say that I've had some very good luck Oscars during my time in the Hobby.

It is very true that many Oscars have the kind of "personality" that they end up being able to do small tricks (if driven by food) & my Oscars were known for submerging and rolling over on their sides for me to scratch their sides. They would also loose their minds when I entered the room & splash water everywhere, (again food driven ), lol

You are also exactly right that they love to dismantle their tanks & while I always kept some driftwood in the tank with a few plastic plants,....aquascaping their tanks like I did others was many times a wasted effort.

I'd also say that Oscars vary in personality & while they are sometimes "wild" & "flamboyant" in a species tank,...they are many times bullied by other fish when mixed in a community tank.

So you never REALLY know how they'll get along with other fish.

That's been my experience.

I'd guess that the flowerhorn will become too aggressive to be kept with the oscars. They have quite a nasty reputation. At any rate, if it did work out, they would need a bare minimum of 150 gallons. One oscar by itself needs at least a 75.

Well the tank size is 68g at present but i plan to increase the size to 130g by the end of next month. Do they like hiding like the cichlids

FH = aggressive while Oscars = pansies by cichlid standards...so I wouldn't mix them. They'll probably hide in the beginning, but as they settle down/grow they should stay out in the open more.

At first my Oscars use to hide but each one was enticed out by the promise of food. They are gluttonous & messy eaters!!

After awhile ( a very short while) it was are that they EVER hid, especially when YOU enter the room.

we have resently bought a 2" oscar he sits at the front of the tank all day long, IMO i think they have one of the best personalitys out of cichlids they seem to not run and hide when we go anywhere near the tank like some other cichlids LOL. also maybe post us some pics that would be great:):):)

Sooner or later, the FH will take them out in a tank that size.
