Okay I'm stuck on a hard decision, either go with a planted tank, or go with getting an oscar, and from what I've seen an read about them, I really like them. At this point, I'm leaning heavily on getting an oscar. They look like really neat fish and I would like to have a larger fish for a change. So my question is, would an oscar be okay to live in a 75g by himself, or other larger fish. And what are the water params. for oscars. If anybody could give me some insight on this and maybe show me some pics of some of your tanks that have oscars. Thank You.

oh to add to that, is it okay if they go without feeder fish and just let them stick to a regular diet of pellets and such, I don't want to feed him feeder fish from the store from risk from disease and I don't have the time to breed my own.

75g will be find for a single Oscar and a few smaller fish...though a tankmate isn't coming to mind. Another Oscar-sized fish in a 75g and there may be aggression issues, as well as water quality if you ever get lazy...Oscars are messy and so are most suitable tankmates.

My dream is a ~1000gal SA/CA tank, with Oscars, Convicts, a smaller preditor cat or two (I like the TSN but they get a bit too big for my tastes), and a few other larger cichlids from CA/SA...but that's my dream and it's a long way off...

What is your pH? Most likely if you keep it stable it is fine.

If you could keep nitrates below 20ppm you could have two in there, but that will require a very aggressive water change schedule. I think it could be done. If you grow them up together and do not feed live food they should be fine as far as aggression goes.

Diet should be just New Life Spectrum (NLS) for any fish in my opinion and experience. You want to avoid live foods because they can introduce pathogens, are nutritionally incomplete, and increase aggression. NLS is a truly complete and balanced diet. You can check out the pics in my PhotoBucket page in my signature to see for yourself.

thanks for the help, I think I will get an oscar for the 75g and do a smaller planted tank. Im excited now. Thanks again.:)

That is the smartest decision when it comes to feeding oscars.
As for the water conditions, as long as you are neither on the very extremes, or unstable in pH, just keeping it consistent in pH is what matters. Keeping nitrates down and doing lots of water changes will help prevent HITH disease, and allow some smaller tankmates, such as red hump eartheaters or a blue acara

you can drop a bristlenose pleco and a convict with the oscar and call it a night
