Oscars

fishy45cory there is a bass pro shop in Concord Mills Mall Concord NC I don't if thats close to you but thats the only one I know of in the Charlotte NC area.

I would also get a bigger tank before you get the oscar. The oscar will get large very fast.

I could well be way 'out of line' on this, but it seems many LFS would sell these fish if they were good "tank" specimens for the average aquarist.

I can't speak for all states, but it is illegal in some for LFS to sell some fish native to the state. Fish thought to be "odditities," like albino channel cats, are the exception. Plus, some places require a permit just to have them in a display tank.

As it has already been said, a 29 is not big enough for a single oscar, much less anything with him.

Like most wild caught species, fry adjust better than adults to the "glass walls." They adjust better to the food offered to them, the presense of people and the environment in general.

blue gills

I wouldn't put a blue gill (this is a type of sunfish/or is the same thing) in a tank and then try to make it adjust to tropical conditions. I'm in ny and we used to catch blue gills in the local lakes and I never thought of it as a "fish tank" fish. I guess if you try to match its natural condition and them try to find fish of the same conditions then it might work.
29 gal would not work for an oscar not at least if you wasnt your fish to be happy and survive.
