oto cats not cleaning glass?

I have two oto cats in my 20 gallon tank. For about a week or two, they didn't really do any cleaning of my serious brown algae problem, but since then they've done a fairly good job on the fake rocks, fake plants, and even the substrate. However, they don't seem to be cleaning the tank glass? I see it slowly building up and getting worse, at least along the back of the tank, and on the sides. I don't remember if the front has the same issue. The area right at the substrate/glass is the worst, where it's almost solid brown algae. I should also maybe point out that the back of the tank has one of those fake backgrounds, but I don't think that really makes a difference.

Are they just not finding it, or maybe just prefer having their mouths pointed flat as opposed to vertically up/down? They used to attach to the glass vertically up a lot more often, but now seem to mostly keep their bodies flat. It's not an issue for me to manually clean the glass, I just want to know if they might eventually feed on it, in which case I'll leave it for them. It's been at least two weeks since they've finished mostly cleaning the rest of the tank. Throughout the whole cleaning process, I've been feeding them 2-3 shrimp pellets once/day, so it's not that they've found something else they like more and aren't eating anything else.

2 otos in a 20 isn't that many...they may not have found all the other brown algae yet and are still working on it in places that you don't see. My guess is they'll get to your glass eventually. I'm oto-less right now, but I had a duo for 5 years (it was a trio for 3 years) and they only hit the glass after the rest of the tank was up to their standards. Who knows, maybe cleaning rocks, plants and ornaments is more fun?

I have 3 ottos in a 10G and get a similar situation at times. Mostly, it's that hte ottos just don't care to wander over to the one back corner, resulting in all kinds of diatoms on one side of my tank, with crystal clear glass on the other. I just clean the offending area with a scraper and move on with my life.

Mostly I suspect they establish feeding grounds and stick to them unless they get hungry enough to be motivated to move. In my situation, they stay basically in half the tank, never passing the location that I drop food (center of tank) in any of their usual trips. 9 times out of 10 I can actually find my ottos camped in the same 3" section of my glass (right next to the heater/filter)

I'd say, get another one! they're fun in groups, I just got three today and am really enjoying their antics. as far as not cleaning the glass, I'd say they're going to eat whatever smells and tastes best first, there is an abundance of the good stuff, so the glass is left behind. get another one!

They are constant foragers and will find it. However, I would clena your glass to allow the Otos a chance to 'keep-up'. Also, 2 Otos are fine, but they will take longer to get things cleaned out. Once done, they will maintain things nicely IMO.

More will just accelerate the cleaning process, but 2 are fine IMO. I have 2 in my 30G and it took them ~2 weeks to clean things out, but then I got them when my tank was new and finished cycled so the diatoms never got to be an issue.

I took a much closer look at my tank, and NinjaPirate seems to described my situation fairly well. I've known my oto cats like to hang out mostly on one side of the tank (underneath the filter with stronger water current), and only go to the other side with just random foraging, and because I put a shrimp pellet there. I see them sucking the ground/fake rocks/plants, just not the glass. The glass on their side, however, appears much cleaner than the rest of the tank. So I guess I'll clean the rest of the tank manually. Thanks.
