otocinclus or flying fox?

But, you went there with background info and got what you wanted. If you know more than the LFS you should be able to get fish from any store and be fine. Their fish may be fine, even if their advice is not. Just be armed with good knowledge before you go.

If anything, flying fox or SAE, it's going to get too big for the 5G very quick.
These things can get pretty big! :(

I agree... under optimal conditions, the SAE's get to about 6" long and the CAE's get bigger (and more aggressive). It's VERY easy to spot the difference between these two fish. The black line runs through the tail and the black line is slightly jagged while the CAE's is smooth. I'm not sure about the habits of CAE's, but SAE's have a tendency to "perch" on plant leaves from their tales.

IMO... SAE's are very cool fish and some of the most docile. I am getting some Zebra Ottos when they come back in season, however, they are pretty sensitive to water conditions and temperature.

I know this makes me sound like a complete newbie - which I don't think of myself as... it's just that I've never kept or even been aware of otos before. All the posts about them on this board have convinced me of their virtues, I just had to give them a try.

Its kind of funny, everyone on this forum reccomends them, yet I've never seen one at my LFS...

Oh yeah, don't flying foxes get really aggressive? And they get pretty big.

Thanks to everyone for the comments! I plan to either take them back to the store or shift them to larger tanks (one per tank). I have the 44g at home and another person at work has a 40g that I can put fish into... so it should all work out ok. I kind of like the little guys now. Hopefully they won't get too aggressive as they grow!

Cheers!

Just thought I would send an update... I finally located some otos for my tank! I bought one and removed the flying fish from the small tank and put them into my large tank. I plan to keep one of them and take the rest to a store since I just don't have the room to house them as they grow.

So far, I love my new oto :)

At least here in Nj they're quite common, but easily over looked. I love them for their efficiency.

I would strongly recommend buying atleast two more Oto's, even if its a 5gal tank, they don't do so well alone. If food is a problem then just supplement with fresh veggies. Oto food supplementation has been discussed here many times, simply 'search' it out.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should get 2 of them or not. I think I might though, there's lots of food for them at the moment :)

I have a single cory and I know they aren't supposed to like being solitary but he seems quite happy alone... I may still get him a friend soon though just because I like corys so much. I'm guessing I am already overstocked there and I will need to do some shifting around again. It's nice to have several tanks at my 'disposal' in order to do things like that. There are 2 others at work with larger tanks and they actually want me to stock them - what a great deal!

I may still need to take a few fish to a trusted store though. Somehow I feel guilty doing that (except for the flying fox case, stupid LFS employee!). I've never actually done it before and I feel a little bad about it - like I should have planned better... Each fish I buy now is WELL thought out and researched.
