It looks like my 2 new Otos are doing too good a job. My plastic plants are getting nice and clean along with everything else. So what happens when there's nothing left for them? Will they eat flake food?

Q

How big of an aquarium is this? In my experience otos will find enough to eat even if you don't feed them directly; they are so tiny and cold-blooded so they really don't need much food. If you want you could try feeding them some romaine lettuce dipped in boiling water for a few seconds. Drop it in the tank for a few hours tied to a rock then take it out.

I actually have a theory that this is why so many people have problems keeping ottos long term. they seem to be obligate brown algae feeders (they don't seem very interested in green algae wafers). I also feel they are one of the few fish that do not acclimate well to water chem other than their natural conditions.

My Otos absolutely love blanched zuchini. They cling to it for hours. They do seem to like the brown diatoms better than the everyday algae too.

I blanch a long green been and then attach it to the side of the tank with a small suction cup, my Oto spends a lot of time on not only munching but resting as well!

One of my otos loves zucchini (he doesn't move away from it when it's in the tank), and the others at least eat it. Mine also eat algae wafers, preferrably the Wardley ones. For some reason, they also like shrimp pellets very much.

lightly blanched spinach. you'll definitely find them hanging out on it, munching and scraping. get yourself a veggie clip and stick it to the side of the tank.

I concur. I had a persistent brown algae problem in my 10g that would never go away no matter how many water changes I did. It was up to 25% every 3 days at one point... So I bought two oto's and within days all the brown algae was gone but they wouldn't touch the green stuff.

my otos seem to have a taste for shrimp pellets and plecomin tablets. maybe they learned to eat this from watching the cories? dunno, but when its feeding time they are right down there with the cories eating away. same with the cardinals, don't eat the flakes and granules i put in there for them, they prefer to eat what the cories are eating. goofy fish.

Heh, that sounds familiar. I put algae wafers for the otos and shrimp pellets for the cories into the aquarium. What happened was that the otos ate the shrimp pellets and the cories the algae wafers. I should give them a fish book to read so they learn how to behave properly ;).
