Hey guys, what are your thoughts on adding an otto to my betta's 3g eclipse? The only reason being, algae collects considerably fast on the acrylic walls. It seems the more I scrub it with an algea brush, the faster it grows back. My experience with ottos in my other tanks prove to be quality maitenence men. I have one in my 20g and I havent seen algae since I put him in. Thanks.

Do it if you want it. I think it would be fine.

I added two snails to mine... it worked wonders :-) but a otto sounds like more fun!

Thanks for the feedback, I thought it would be fine, just wanted to get an outside opinion. Ottos are proof that fish, in fact, do clean aquariums.

i agree with cam, a 3 gallon tank is not large enough to house more than just the betta.

your algae problem has a source. what you need to do is eliminate that source. what type of light do you have on the tank and how long is it on for each day? do you have live plants? if yes to live plants, are you dosing any sort of fertilizer for them? is this tank near a source of natural sunlight, like by a window?

i'd clean the algae off, not turn on the tank light for a few days, and see if that makes a difference. if the tank is near a window, move it away from sources of natural sunlight.

Dont otos do better in groups like cories? I cant quite remember, so dont quote me on that.

What about a few shrimp for such a small tank as opposed to anything larger?

BettaFishMommy is right - you need to fix the source of the algae problem. However, your 3 gallon tank has plenty of room for a betta and an oto.

I'll try leaving the light off for longer intervals. It's the stock light that comes in the hood of the eclipse tanks. There are two java fern in the tank, which are low-light plants, and I don't think there is a need for a dose of fertilizer. As far as keeping ottos in large groups, I have never heard of it. I have two in my 46g, and one in my 20. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread, I'll pick up an otto tomorrow.
