Please help!! We have done everything we know of, of how to rid our tank of it's disgusting odor...It smells like wet towels or poop...I dunno...It's so gross. We have 11 huge goldfish and 2 algae suckers(?) It's a 15 gallon tank and we have 2 external filters. We've had to change the filters almost every other day and this is getting pretty expensive! The smell stays gone for one day and then it's back again  I'm thinking that we need a new tank....I am getting really tired and grossed out with this smell! Oh ya...we've tried the odor solution and still no luck! Can anyone help with this dilemma?! Thank you in advance :)

umm.... i'm thinking it's because your tank is horribly overstocked. your goldfish are most likely badly stunted by now... and plecos aren't good to keep with goldfish, anyway. i'm surprised all of them are still alive.

Water changes, water changes, water changes. Also, you have a LOT of goldfish in a small tank. They are notorious waste producers and will probably need to be relocated to an outdoor pond, as they can also get large. I think even if you do 100% water changes every day, you still might not be able to keep up with wate production.

I would say you should get a pond to keep the goldfish in, and what type of pleco is yours? i'm guessing it's a common.

How huge are you talking about? Eleven in a 15 gal tank?

You need to make them all go away. If the pleco is a common, it also needs to go away. The goldies are cold water, maybe a 200 gal pond would be okay, short term.

Besides the goldies are a messy fish and huge bio load, you are probably overfeeding and not doing enough tank maintenance with that many fish in that small of a tank.

How long has this been going on?

I am most reluctant to tell you some short term cures for fear of the abuse will continue. For the sake of the fish, large daily water changes, cut the feeding to every other day, and gravel vac like crazy!

What are your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

yes, I need to know too!

To put it in perspective I have 3 three inch goldfish in a 10G tank that is considered to be VERY overcorwded and I am trying frantically to find them new homes. If you 11 "huge" goldfish in a 15G I am not sure how you are even keeping them alive. Plus there are not many algae suckers in any family that will go in 15 G, and I don't know of any pleco variety that should be kept in a 15 much less 2 of them. Please get the goldfish in a pond and find out what type of algae sucker you have many of them get very large.

I dont' know. I think they honestly don't know any better... Maybe I'm being too generous.

The average pet owner isn't as smart as all of us :p: We're in the fishy elite...
