Hello All,

I have been out of the hobby for about a year, but now have a nice space for my tank. It's a 10g with 25w Incandescent lights (2), a heater, a Penguin Mini Filter w/ Biowheel etc. etc.

I am currently about a week into my fishless cycle, but I want to go ahead and plan for what I will stock the tank with, once it is done cycling.

I need some ideas on what I can put in this tank... I really like livebearers, and I want one centerpiece fish, and one bottom/algae eater. I would really like a channel cat, but they need bigger than a 10g.

So what I need:

Livebearers (preferably not guppies)
Centerpiece fish (who can get along in a community tank)
Algae/bottom feeder (who will clean up for me)

Thanks
Jason

if you get a livebearer that doesnt have fancy fins, a betta would be an amazing centerpiece in a 10 gal, just get lots of floating plants in there to help keep watermovement to a minimum, but you wouldnt be able to raise fry with a betta...
small cories would be good bottom feeders, but if you want an algie eater get a siamese algie eater (NOT A CHINESE) or some ottos

ed's got a great setup, do you have any pics of that?

I would only want to raise about 1-3 of the fry, the rest I will just let nature take it's course, it's the most humane way to do it, because I definately don't want hundreds of fry in the ecosystem... I have a spare 5 gal, with a filter etc. that I would use for birthing...

Ed, you have pics?

I like Jason's suggestion.

I would also suggest 3 platys if you like live bearers. Especially the "sunburst" strain... one of my favs.

With those platys I would include a dwarf pleco i.e. a flash pleco (L204). But since you will need to have some specialized feeding for the pleco to have optimum health, I would suggest some amano or cherry shrimp, even ghost shrimp if you prefer, to aid in cleaning up any excess food and/or algae.

And as the centerpiece fish, I would use a dwarf sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila).... not too easy to find here in SoCal, but they are out there.

I think I would rather have guppies than platys. Could I get away with 2 males, 6 females, a betta, and then a bottom feeder (2 cory's or 1 dwarf plec)? And where the heck can i get ghost shrimp, and how much do they run?

Guppies and bettas don't do well together - the betta will tend to tear the guppy fins to shreds.

I had a betta in with my platies for years and they got on great.

I'm not a big fan of fancy guppies, I would much rather have the plain ones. Do those do well with the bettas?

Does this sound right?
8 Livebearers (2 males 6 females)
1 betta
2 cory's or 1 dwarf plec
