As far as I know only sponges can not be exposed to air. Most other corals (every coral I have ever dealt with) can easily be exposed to air for 10-15 minutes without any problems at all. I have heard I can have them out of water for an hour or more (like in nature) and they would still be fine but I am definately not willing to try that out on any of my corals to verify that information. I would try to keep anything exposed to air as short as possible obviously, but 1-2 minutes, which is the normal time when fragging out of water, is no problem at all. The key is to not let the corals dry out, do not expose them to high light (MH) out of water nor expose them to lots of air movement (house fan). Corals do produce their own protective slime when taken out of water so they do not dry out quickly. Millions of years of evolution the corals have learned a few tricks on how to survive.
