over filtration?

I wouldn't bother returning it, you'll be thankful for the extra filtration. I've got a 2.5 gallon planted betta tank with a couple ghost shrimp and DIY CO2 with a 20 gph hang on back filter. The shrimp can easily beat the current, and they almost seem like its a fun thing to do once in a while. I have a couple types of stem plants, some cryptos and micro swords planted in the stream front of the filter, and everything is growing and popping out new leaves. The movement from the current just seems to make everything more lifelike.

there is no such thing as too much filtration

I agree with the guy above.... I'm running an AC500 (rated @ 500gph) and an Eheim 2217 (rated @ 264gph) on a 42 gallon (160L) tank. It might sound like huge overkill & it is, but I wouldn't dream of only running one of them on its own.

The tank is holding a variety of african cichlids & catfish... all of which are very very happy! Like someone else said, the rated flow amount is usually the output BEFORE media/sponge is added.

Everything is going great in my tank. The current really only seems to be strong right in front of the outflow, and along the back of the tank, where the flow is pointed. My fish like to swim in it sometimes. I also put a log and a couple of pots and caves in there, the fish like to sleep behind or inside them. The foxtail plant turned out to be too fragile (bits kept coming off, and sometimes whole plants uprooted), but I moved it all to a corner away from the flow and it’s coping just fine now. I put some anacharis around and that seems to be holding up much better. Thanks for all your advice.:)

in my 55g I run a 750lph filter with carbon and a sponge 350lph with just filter floss. The fish seem to like riding the current from end to end.
