Over filtration?

I can't seem to find the power consumption on the two hob filters I have I dunno if it would cost less power wise to run a xp2 or two of the hob filters. I like the idea of running a canister due to the customization I can do with it but i can live with the two hob if it takes less power to run.

The current isnt bad now since I only have about 40 gallons of filtration for my 28. I am now just thinking about just up grading to a xp2 and ditching the penguin 150 (back up maybe?) the deal breaker right now is if it takes less energy to run a xp1 or xp3 instead of two hob filters (whisper 10 & penguin 150)

XP1 consumes 9 watts of electricity, and I believe the XP3 consumes 14. (XP2 is something like 11 or 12 watts) As far as what Rena says (the makers of the Filstar XP filters) the XP3 is good for a 175g tank, and the XP2 for a 75g tank. So I have filtration adequate for a 250g tank on my 55g tank? Not quite. Its mostly evaluated based on water flow rate (though that is not the only factor) and between the two filters I have, I've got 650gph turnover rate, or almost 12x per hour. Ideally, aim for 10x, since we all KNOW the filters don't flow quite as much water as they indicate. Once its got filter media and begins to get some gunk in it, it'll be about half of rated, giving me a bare minimum of nearly 6x per hour. I'd aim to be in that ballpark, though the extra bio media never hurts when it comes to the bells and whistles. (a 300gph HOB vs a 300gph canister... I'd take the canister for filtration options and volume of filter media it can hold)

I think I am just going to go ahead and get the xp2. The problem is that for at least 4-6 weeks I am going to have to run both the xp2 and the penguin 150 until the xp2 cycles.

You can seed the XP2 with some filter floss from the penguin, since its got the bio wheel to help its biological filter. Should help speed the process up a little bit.

Whoops not running any filter floss in the penguin or the whisper 10. I could just give in and get some bio spira for the filter and just poor the bio spira directly into the filter w/o the carbon and let it cycle with the whisper 10 for a week.
