My power went out today for 6 hours. I took out the filter media (have a plastic backup one in there which I left in) and manually aerated the tank every 45 mins. I kept warm bags of water floating in the tank and was able to keep temp from wavering only 2 degrees and that was for a very short time. However, in adding warm dechlorinated water, I added 15 drops of Stress Zyme instead of 5. Will that harm fish? Took water sample 5 hours later and all levels are 0.
Should I put a new filter in? I didn't keep the old one moist which I just read on a post I should've done. I have a HOB.
You don't have to put a new filter in, as that might stress your fish even more. The bacteria should still be alive after a few hours with no oxygen. Just plug it back in as soon as possible.
Dr Woo: my error, I meant that I put 3x the amount of STRESS COAT in the gallon of warm water I added to the tank during power outage. are you saying that's not problematic?
One time I also accidentaly added 3x the recomended amount of stress zyme. It resulted in total disaster! I lost 4 of what at the time had been a school of 5 Neon tetras! But, it could just be my great luck. Lol
