Overflow question

What can I do about the holes in my overflows to avoid getting fish stuck in them? I had a goby that got stuck in one and died (took me 3 weeks to finally find him- didn't think he was small enough to get in there). I definitely do not want to have this happen again to any of my fish or future fish.

Suggestions?

I don't believe the flow throught the teeth in a overflow box is strong enough for fish to get caught in it, unless the fish is weak and dying. Matter of fact my small royal grammer love to hide behind the overflow box. My overflow box is rated at 1,200GPH.

If you want, you could place a mesh like the one in CPR overflows.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not really worried about the teeth in my overflows. It's that each overflow has 2 separate circular holes (about the size of a penny- at least) on each side that the fish can freely swim into if they wanted to.

I did read about the mesh in another thread- and using it with a rubberband. That wouldn't work for me (drilled) so I'd need a different way to attach the mesh.

I have never seen an overflow with that kind of design. All the one I have seen have either teeth or the mesh.

Okay so, if you pretend the teeth are larger- how can I cover them?

5xevy, not a huge help here, but I was wondering what you think of the tank? I'm assuming you had to drill into the cabinet to accommodation the plumbing? Does the overflow box take up a lot of space in the tank?

It's just that on the sides are these holes. Don't want another fish getting stuck inside.

Sorry.. not a huge help either since someone has said this already, but... mesh sounds like the only option I can think of.. something you can cover those holes with all around... and with openings small enough for the fish to not fit through.. but big enough to keep your water flow.
 
Thanks Dustin. I read on another thread here about mesh and a rubberband. The rubberband won't fit around the overflows since they're connected to the back glass wall. So now I have to think of a way to connect the mesh.

(Or buy larger fish)
