I learned an important lesson last week that I want to share with those that have an overflow like this.

I was getting ready to go to bed and noticed an odd sound. I went over to the tank and saw the water level at the very top of the tank. A turbo snail had wedged himself into the overflow tube and almost caused a nightmare.

My hubby cut a piece of eggcrate the size of the overflow, and cut out a space for the tube, and I put a rubber band around it to hold in place.

Just thought others might want to know what can happen when snails go wandering.

I'd glue that egg crate in place. Rubberbands rot and unless you really pay attention to it you'll be in the same place you were before.

Melting

It's a fake woodgrain trim. Previous owner had MH too close.

I just bought an overflow that looks exactly like yours and I have a question,.....are you ready... here it goes....how on earth do you get this thing to work? Am I missing something? I built most of my house, I built my shop, I work full time and also started part time bussiness. I can acomplish most things....but I can not get this overflow to work for the life of me!!!
Please let me know the trick to this :bowing:

Thanks for any help

Well it seems mine is pretty similar to that one as well and has been running for a week weeks now without any problems. Bascially you want to put the skimmer part (with the slots) in the tank and have the water come up maybe halfway up the slots so it's filling the cup. Take a small piece of tubing like what would be connected to a airpump and insert inside the U-tube so that the end inserted inside comes up hangs just a bit over the U part. Put the U-tube in the Overflow making sure the drain side, has enough water so that the U-Tube is covered on both ends by water. Start sucking on the airline tubing that is sticking out of the u-tube and that will create the siphon from the skimmer into the drain box. Once the siphone is going just lift up the U-tube a bit and pull out the airline tubbing making sure to keep the U-tube ends fully submerge at all times. That's it. Only challenge is to tweak the skimmer part in the tank in order to get the flow correct to blance the water level in the tank. There is a filter sponge that goes over the drain part of the overflow that I had to remove in order to keep the overflow from making a crazy sucking noise. I just let the filet sponge float next to the drain to help catch the big bits of food that might make it in. Also I've noticed, since I've added my refugium my water loss is much greater, i have to add a gallon in now every couple of days. Have fun

You know I haven't taken any pictures of it yet now that I got my last fish in and macro-algae I'll post a few pics. It's actually not big at all, only 55 Gal with a 10 Gal refugium. Fish Only with Live Rock, Saltwater.
