I woudl personally avoid the gourami / betta with the danios. If you want that cool tough fish look into a paradish fish instead. They are a little more agressive, so can hold there own better, IMO.

I actually just looked up the Paradise Fish, and since they are semi-aggressive, it says they will eat smaller fish, aka the Neon Tetras! So I don't think that will work!

I agree jm that normally a bigger school would be nicer, but I think I'd personally like the variety of fish more than a bunch of neon tetras. I think a big school of them would be kind of boring in my tank.

if you want to have two schools, you are gonig to want to ahve a dwarf gourami instead of the betta

paradise fish only get to 3.5 inches long, and i have yet to see one eat a fish that is smaller than they are. they might chase some around, but never eat them
