A few tell tale signs of an overstocked tank:
1) Your fish keep dying on you, you replace those that died, then more fish die on you, and you can't figure out why
2) your fish have no place to swim
3) high ammonia but that can also be from overfeeding
4) every other day you have to scrape algae (but that can be due to overfeeding)
5) Your friends comment that you have too many or a lot of fish
