P-Low's Aquatic Log

Tank Update

Okay, I didn't like the one big rock look and wanted to keep with the 3-5-7 theme I have in my main tank and I also didnt like the Mizukusa ichiban sand, so I took my little 10L Tall tank back home and decided to re-scape it.

Found some good rocks (thats one of the nice things about living in Mountainous Nagano) after several groupings settled on these three. I also picked up a bag of ADA Aquatic Soil Africana (For the color). I picked up another HOB filter that came with some bio rings, but it's noisy as heck, but not too bad. Sloped it really haigh in back. Africana seems a bit sturdier than Amazonia and has seemed to keep the slope.

Gathered up the white clouds and put them back with the others in the main tank. Took the Lampeyes from the main tank and added them to this one. So that this is now a lampeye only tank. They match the layout and color well. Love those blue eyes.

More pics later...

Nice.

Africana

I restored the height of my main tank using some of the Africana I had left. I was worried about it being a different color, but it turned out all right. You can't see it for the plants.

Africana, I think, has 2 good points and 1 poor point in my experience so far. The 1st good point is it isn't as dusty or as crumbly as Amazonia. So I didn't have to do 2 water changes after planting. Once wet Africana is kind of like red clay so it gets pretty sticky. So the second good point is that it will, for the most part, stay in the shape you layout your substrate in.

The one poor point is that it is reddish orange. This may not fit everyones layout aspect. Ah one more point. Plants stay pretty well planted in Africana, whereas in Amazonia you sometimes get plants coming loose from the substrate...

My main tank is the one in the first pic. After taking this picture I made a few big changes... I trimmed down the the two big weeds in the lower right hand side and the one on the bottom left along with its child. I trimmed them down and replanted them all further up the slope near the background on the right side just in front of the sword. I also replanted the various rotala into a more suitable pattern. I added more needle type plants to the background, just to the left of the reneikii. I also added some Cuba Pearl, but what a headache that bit of weed is... lets see how it goes... I removed some sad looking pygmy chain sword. Which was fine because its spreading all over the place. The biggest change is that I took out my puffer and put him in my bowl. Yamato shrimp are kind of expensive... I finally caught him in the act so he's been isolated. Better this way too for feeding bloodworms. Now the main tank is all White Clouds, shrimps, otos and one mini bushy.

Picture of the changes tomorrow. . . .

The second picture is my bedroom tank, next to the bowl. Only change here is i added more cuba pearl. What a headache. Wish I had it earlier I would have tied it to moss stones... hopefully it will stay down and root.
I'm not liking the jawa mix moss too much. Its growing much slower than the usual willow moss. I'll hang on to a bit a longer... But I'm thinking about redoing those stones.

What I reffered to as 'big weeds' I just found is called, 'Blyxa Japonica'. They get pretty big and bushy. They were so tiny when I first bought them.
