Pacu Problem

I think it would cause you more problems to take this fish than to just leave it and forget about it. Your compassion is understandable, but these sorts of things are quite common and unless you're willing to tackle the housing issue 100% and not half assed i don't think its worth it.

I remeber a thread a while ago about someone warning others not to take fish just because they felt bad for them. I think it was about a guy who bought some mistreated bettas from some place and ended up spending more money on meds trying to fix them and then they eventually died. He was a little choked.

The only way for it to get out would be to go on to a tank storage plant, and I don't think it could do that. And if it did flood, it wouldn't flood into another river or anything. Would it be costly to setup a pond in my backyard that would fit a few pacu, and save the environmental risks?

If you're a DIY-er you can set one up for fairly cheap.

I would rent a backhoe $120 a day from Lowes, use pondliner once the hole is dug $100, rocks to line the edges $200 (2000lbs), the pumps and such will be the hard/expensive part. I'd say around $500-800 with all the pumps, lines, buckets to make the filter etc.

Just plan it well, make an overflow for the filter, and then it should be great.
