Pacu Problems

I have had a Red bellied Pacu for a couple of years now. Started with him in a 50 gallon and now have him in a 160 gallon tank. Mine is at about 14" and growing. These *******s get BIG! My wife wants me to get rid of him but he is my favorite!

Nice to hear from another pacu enthusiast!! There's so few of us--we need to stick together to fight the forces of spouses that don't understand our fondness for these intelligent fish! (This is going to sound nuts, but I'm convinced my pacu loves music and will dance along, and I've undertaken training him to swim according to arrows pointing in random directions.)
Re: lunches for your pacu.....ours has only eaten tankmates that bother him (ie:algae eaters that try to suck onto his sides), ghost shrimp, and snails. Figure the last two are merely because their swimming habits resemble food that falls to the bottom, which my pacu prefers. Oddly enough though, he is now developing a taste only for protein. Feeding time is getting expensive, we're starting to cook an extra albeit small portion for the fish! Your guy is only a few inches under ours.....what do you feed?

By the way, if your wife is highly motivated for you to get rid of your pacu, has she found any takers that will give him a home?? If so, please pass it along. Untill we can resolve the problem of space for a large tank, am keeping my eyes open for other solutions

There's a Pacu tank at the london aquarium and it's the largest freshwater tank in the whole place as those puppies are biiiiig! would'nt worry about them taking your arm of though. they're peacefull veggies..

Pacus have been known to "remove" keepers fingers quite frequently. Just recently at a bio dome in the UK a small child lost it's finger to a pacu in a pond. A friend of mine also had his pinky "detached" by a pacu at the vancouver aquarium when the black pacus were in the caiman exhibit and there was no guard rail.

Our Black Pacu turned 25 years old in July of this year! When we got him he was about the size of a half-dollar and he started out in a 10g aquarium. He soon progressed to a 55g, then spent the last 20 years in a 412g. He now resides in a 3240g tank. He is about 36" long, 12" from belly to dorsal and about 6" thick and weighs about 35 pounds. We recently added a "baby" Pacu who is about 5 years old and about 1/3 the size of our big Pacu. He has already doubled in size and will probably out-grow the big Pacu because he has a lot more room initially. Anyone contemplating getting a Pacu should know that this is a long-term commitment (I have heard that they can live up to 60 years) and that these fish just keep on growing! They are one of the most enjoyable fish and have distinct personalities!

Hi Debra,

A 3240g tank! Sounds like a mini eco-sysyem. Is it actually in your house? That must be the coolest thing ever. Would love to see some pics if you have any.

Scott

p.s. Mine tank is 33g. But it's only a few months old. Maybe when it grows up it'll be as big as yours :D

Hi Cloud!

We are working on getting some quality pictures to post, but nothing yet. Yes, the tank takes up one wall in our family room in the basement. It pretty much is it's own ecosystem - smaller fish breeding, larger fish eating them....
