right now i have a pacu a couple of months old and around 4 inches, hes in a 20 gallon and im looking to buy a 150 gallon aquarium, how many years can he live in a 150 before outgrowing it?

It is hard to say how long it would be fine, maybe a year ,maybe two or three maybe longer will be fine ,it will depend on how much food you give it and the water conditions you have it in. I would say about three to four years and if it was at all possible I would try to get it into a bigger tank as soon as possible. But thats just me. Goodluck and I am glad you are thinking of your fish's well being.

Ah..I just posted in your other thread...didn't see this one. I'm glad to hear you're at least thinking of getting a 150 for these guys. Ashdavid is pretty much right....2-3 years should be fine for the pacu in that size tank. Get some massive filtration and keep up your water changes...pacus are poop factories...as are oscars.

what would be a good filter setup for a 150 gal tank? Keep in mind im on a very tight budget right now. My buddy has a 12 inch oscar in a 75 gallon tank with a hang on back filter with a bio weel but i feel these are only good for the bio weel and probably dont do much filtering but im still a noob and could be wrong. I am very mechanically inclined so any DIY option is welcome.

I'd go with a wet/dry system supplemented by a good canister or HOB filter...a couple of ac 500s with sponges only would provide decent mechanical filtering.
You can build your own w/d filter.
Here is one DIY plan...you can google and search for more.
