Newbe with dumb question: I'm doing some staining and painting in an adjoining room, and I wonder if fumes from stains or paints could have adverse affect on fish? Thanks !

If you can close off the room then do so.

I lost a fine elephantnose a couple months ago while we were painting an adjacent hallway. Could be coincidence, but if it's just a matter of closing a door... why not?
You could also turn off any air driven filters/airstones etc. for the duration- assuming you have adequate circulation otherwise and aren't overstocked.

Also, if the fumes are over-powering, you can drape a blanket or towel(s) over the tank.

I read something....somewhere...that paint fumes do indeed damage fish. So, turn off your airstone, (as Cear said,) but make sure water does not flow down the air tubing and into your air pump. If you have a large enough tank, (with my experience, 40 Gallons or larger,) water will come up through the air tubing and into the pump when the pump is off. This can be prevented with a check valve. These cost about a buck.

If your tank is smaller though, you may want to unplug your pump and test to see if water comes up through the tubing.
