There was no personal attack. There was simply good advice. If someone wants to whine and cry like a 5 year old about someone "calling fish names", they don't need to be involved in a discussion about them.
Regular BP's aren't bred with convicts. Those are jelly bean parrots, the result of a female BP and a male con (male BP's are sterile over 99% of the time). The parentage of regular BPs is highly guarded and while there are lots of theories, we really can't say for sure. Where it gets extra confusing is that a lot of LFS's refer to dyed regular BPs as "jellybeans," which of course isn't really the case. They are dyed regular BP's.
very true, and just another side effect of the terrible genetics involved in making this fish. I didn't realize the % was so high though, wow. "There is no unauthorized breeding in Jurassic Park" :headshake2:
That's what I've been told anyway, by folks on a forum just for BPs. I tend to believe it... fertile BP eggs are nearly impossible to come by, though the females do try.
So sad that such a creature is forced to exist. Nothing against the fish, they're cute little fish and all. I just wish mankind would stop screwing with things that don't need screwing with. We have thousands upon thousands of amazing fish occuring in nature, with no intervention from the hand of man. We don't need to force our thumbprint on everything =\
Agreed, I guess I just feel less strongly about it than you do. Like I said, I purchased mine before I was experienced enough in the hobby to consider the ethical ramifications of hybrid fish, and now that I have them it is my responsibility to give them the best care possible. Mine have some pretty stiff competition for food, but they are surprisingly fast swimmers and always get their share. They really do have a great personality, even compared to other cichlids. And, they turn a great shade of bright orange as they hit adulthood (they are gray as juvies, if not dyed), without the attitude of, say, a red devil. There are positive qualities to them too.
Oh I do feel strongly about it. Any and all forms of animal cruelty or abuse just flat out tick me off. And no, I'm not a tree hugger or a vegetarian or anything "progressive" like that. There are animals meant for food, and I'm perfectly ok with that. But when it comes to modifying those animals into creatures that were never intended to exist, I get upset. And don't get me started on someone that doesn't go with fishless cycling

I shouldn't get involved here, but I must make one comment, and then I will not say anything again in this thread. You say you are not a vegetarian, so you eat beef, chicken, etc because they are animals meant for food. By the same token, these fish are meant for decoration. Now I don't like dyed fish, it does seem cruel, but BPs are simply fish that have been selectively bred for their looks. Mules are sterile Donkey/Horse hybrids bred for strength. Why not a fish bred to look pretty, even if it is sterile? If you think that the beef and chicken you eat and the milk you drink (for just a couple of examples) have not been selectively bred to make them more profitable to those that produce them, you are sorely out of touch with the realities of the economy and business. Fish are also a business, just one producing ornaments rather than food. I don't like BP because I think they look funny, not because I am against hybridizing fish. Now an argument (Off-Topic) I can get behind is the totally illegalization of, and huge prison sentences for anyone keeping, viable, invasive, exotics that have the potential to wipe out entire eco-systems that have no defenses against them (Snakehead, etc.)
