If anyone has any information on this please let me know thanks. I am thinking about painting my tank background black. Do you paint the inside or outside. Also is it possible to remove the paint later on. Thanks

Outside matt black, like blackboard paint...

Paint the outside. Whether or not you can remove it depends on the type of paint you use.
I used acrylic black paint and could take it off if I wanted to.

Do the outside, NOT inside. You can remove the paint later, using paint thinner and a 5 in 1 (paint scraper) I'm not sure, but I think black would add contrast, but take away from the color of the tank as a whole.

It might be a good idea to use paper just to test it out. If you use paint thinner to remove it then you might have to drain the tank since glass is so porus. Maybe someone has expereince with this and know if you can do it when the tank is runnung.

Either way, I'd be sure its something you want.

Umm... glass is not porous. If it was it wouldn't be used for fishtanks.

Glass is porous to some degree which is why you can't use windex on the glass. The water molecules are bigger than the pores but some thing can slip through over time. Windex will cause high ammonia levels since ammonia is the main ingredient.

My LFS just remodeled thier FW tank area and had to remove paint from a bunch of tanks. This is the way they did it, with the tanks running, and said there was no problems w/ the fish. That doesn't mean its true..... What did you mean about the paper? I think the way to test would be to paint a tiny spot on a bottom corner so the substrate would hide it if there was a problem.

i use windex and have for 10 years, I spray onto the towel and wipe. never heard of glass, especially as thick as fish tank glass can get, being pourous, I have to disagree. I would never condone spraying chemical directly onto glass though.
