Alright I am doing some painting. Mostly I will be painting furniture, but I am pretty sure I will have to do most of it inside the house (I might be able to do some outside if the weather looks good). I am also painting a small bathroom but it is far from my fish tank. So, I’m not worried about that. I am worried about the furniture. I will be painting some of it I the room next to where my tank is, and I will actually be painting the trim of my very large and heavy entertainment center, which is right ext to the fish tank. I cannot move this piece. It would also be a pain to move the fish tank.

I am doing this in the next couple of days while my husband is out of town, if I try to do it while he is home it may never get done. So, I do not have any help.

Obviously, I want to keep my fish alive. I will well ventilate the house when painting (and after). I was also thinking of covering the top of the fish tank with a garbage bag while I paint. It would be put on right before I start, and come off as the paint starts to dry. I have heard of this being done when people call in an exterminator. After the paint dries (maybe the next moring) I can do a couple of good sized water changes as well.

Do you think this will do more good than harm for the fish? How long do you think I can keep the bag on the tank? Any suggestion on what type of paint to use? I was going to go with standard acrylic, but I will take suggestions.
 ?

You shouldn't have to do anything. Paint fumes shouldn't go into the water. People do it when they spray for bugs because that is a liquid and can easily go into a tank. Fumes from paint should have no affect on the water. Unless you are spraying in that case ignore me.

If I wasn't painting right next to the tank I wouldn’t be worried, but I imagine some fumes might mix as the water is agitated? I had a filter problem ad some very stressed fish recently so I want to be extra careful.

But yes I am going to brush on the paint.
