Hey guys. I just got back from petsmart from which i bought 4 neons to go with my other 2. MY other 2 i have had for 3 months and have bright red/blue/neon colors on them. The 4 i just got are very pale almost white...but they are also very small. IS it just because they are young?

THanks

i don't think so. maybe neon tetra disease....
I heard neon tetra disease can turn your fish pale.

Fish infected with Neon Tetra Disease will show signs of becoming pale in color (white patches beneath their skin). The fish will not school with the others and become listless. Through the latter stages of the disease the fish´s body will begin to degenerate. Usually the tail end of the body will seem dwarfed and becomes useless, this will cause the fish to have trouble swimming. Upon witnessing these symptoms, death is imminent, consider euthanasia. To my knowledge their is no cure for the disease. I have seen the disease many times and have yet to see it become an epidemic. The disease will however continue to infect your fish until the cause has been remedied. Neon Tetra Disease is usually caused by stress due to poor water conditions, shock (dramatic change of environment), or being harassed by other fish. The disease is fatal but it will not kill them that quickly. It is a degenerative disease that goes through many phases and may take weeks before they will die, the actual amount of time depends on the general health of the fish. The disease is borne of a cyst and it will migrate to the digestive system and eventually the muscles of the infected fish.

I know, it's long...

Wel....actualyl after looking at them again. (at time of posting i have only had them in there for about 5 min.) There color is slowly starting to come more apparent. So maybe(hoepfully) it was just stress.

Except for one....

let's hope. neon tetra disease is one of the scariest diseases of fish out there.

Well there is one that i am worried about. Lets say that he has it. WOudl it spread to the others?

My first guess is that it is stress related. All or most fish will lose a lot of thier color when they are stressed. Being in the tanks at the store which we all know is not as good water quality as our own tank, being bagged, and then being introduced into a completely different enviroment will induce a lot of stress. Think about when the employee at the store is trying to net your fish. They (the fish) are all swimming side to side as if they are running for thier lives. They don't know that they are going to a much better and healthier enviroment. If you look at the fish when this is happening it is amazing how fast they lose thier color. I guess we do too like when we get scared or suddenly startled, sometimes we momentarily lose all the color in our face. I suppose it is much the same reaction in the fish. I am sure that once they settle in they will be just fine.
