Anyone know of any algae eaters and bottom feeders -- invertebrates, fish, don't care what -- found in that area of the world that are available in aquaria?

I've been going through a large database list by family name and region, but have yet to come up with anything suitable or available. The list only has fish on it, too.

There are likely to be Caridina or Neocaridina shrimp species in the area, some are very good algae eaters, most are good scavengers.

Do some Google searches for locales.

You might contact Frank from

http://www.franksaquarium.com/

for species and potential livestock sourcing, but he does not do winter shipments.

reiverix,

Cool, thanks! Good site for finding out what comes from where. Dunno how to find a retailer tho :( Looks like they are importing crossed rainbowfishes. Not a good thing and it's not the first import site I've seen that's doing that.

RTR,
Never thought of Frank! Good idea. Mucho thankos

A note: most of those fish are native to neither PNG nor Indonesia proper.
Yes, that's true, however those are fish that are available in aquaria (somewhere!) and I can cross reference them with fishbase.org known locations.

Roan Art: Were you referring to the database I posted in the previous message?
Yes, I've been using that one and the ANGFA members database. Long lists :)

One thing to have a list of fish, another thing to have a list of *available* fish. Grumble!

Though likely unsuited to your aquaria, pig-nosed turtles (Carettochelys spp.) are worthy of mention (if only by virtue of their endearing appearances - look through the previous site's Multimedia page), as are Zenarchopterus dispar.
Cute! Definitely won't work though :)
Actually, I have to thank you! I went to the site of the guy who took the photograph of that swordfishthingy and he has an AMAZING photographical library of different specie from that area of the world. I'm currently going through all the loaches. Many are in Indonesia, Asia, etc.,. nothing in Malaysia yet. The pictures themselves make the library cool stuff.

PNG has a tremendously diverse Gobiid fauna, as well as many Anguillids (check the "fish" segments of www.franksaquarium.com).
Yep, but unfortunately gobies are very territorial and can be aggressive. If my Goo obos (Allomogurnda nesolepis) are as laid back as they claim, I can probably do 4 per tank over two tanks and do something else in the third one. I just don't want to plan on another gobiidae in case it doesn't work out.

http://www.angfa.org.au/ and [/quote]I'm a member of the ANGFA :...w.mongabay.com/fish/data/Papua_New_Guinea.htm look to be fine resources.
Those tables on MongaBay are from Fishbase.org and I've been using them along with the ANGFA database.

I *am* going to email Frank and see if he knows of and can get anything that fits the theme.

Thanks for your help.
