I have the opportunity to pick up a m/f pair but before I do I need more info about them.

I have been told I need 200+ gallon tank truth or fiction? I was also told that only acceptable tankmates"might" be Managuense. Can anyone help me out with some accurate info?

Thanks

I haven't had any experience with dovii but i know they grow to 2' and are about the most aggresive cichlid out there so i would say a 200g sounds about right.

I've never had a dovii but the are on my wish list. I agree that 200+ gallon is the way to go. Tank mates are hit or miss. Most of the time, they kill anything else in the tank with them. You might be lucky and be able to get away with a large pleco. Make sure to provide lots of visual barriers so the two sexes can get away from each other when they're not in breeding mode.

I do have experience and yes.. for a pair a 240g would be minimal. Tank mates are hit or miss.. but for the most part don't expect to have any. I have a 7" male in a 120g by himself and he won't allow any tank mates, even at that small of a size.

They will get to 28" in the wild but usually not much larger then 20" in home aquaria.

Agree with all that has been said. Dovii grow huge, up to nearly 2 feet for males, and are very aggressive. It is rare that you will be able to have tankmates with a dovii even in a large tank, though there are exceptions. With a breeding pair of dovii though, I have never heard of another fish being able to be kept successfully with them unless it's like 500+ gallon tank.
