Hello,

Am planning to get a API general Cure mainly to target internal parasite for my fishes.

Planning to 3% salt dips for the whole tank, then quarantine fish and then using API General Cure for it,
while the tank sits empty of fishes for 1-2 days to kill the larve and eggs.

Also planning to dose pimafix and melafix after PWC and when the API product is totally cleared.

Question is :

1 Does metronidazole+praziquantel kill nematodes?

2 My tank is 250 Litres, that 250 000 cm3. 3% of that will be 7500cm3.
The instructions for my Aquarium salt says to put 1 table spoon per 25 litres. So how much table spoons of salt would I need?
Or do I have to take the Sodium Chloride content into consideration?

Also, any feedback on API General Cure will be appreciated. Thanks

Save your fish the torture and get a parasite medicine you put in their food. You should also stay away from pet store feeders since this is a risky cause. Commercial feeders are where hole in the head and parasites come from. Raise your own...guppies are easy! Raising your own fry is a double benny! You save money in the long run too.

Well.. its too late to raise anything now..

and API general cure IS a parasite medicine. looks like raising fishes are so much easier than administering medicine ... or answering questions..

To do a 3% salt dip for 250 liters would be like 16 pounds of salt (depending on the current salinity). Set up a salt dip in a bucket and med the tank.

What is the thinking behind using a salt dip for internal parasites?

Aquarium salt is Sodium chloride. It's just got a x50 price multiplier.

1 Does metronidazole+praziquantel kill nematodes?
Are these nematodes/planaria? or a parasitic worm?

This will determine treatment.

Using Pimafix/Melafix is completely useless in either case.

To RedScare : I was thinking of doing that to disinfect the tank in case of Parasite eggs and larve. Or is it better to just wash and sterilise everything? (Decor, filter.. etc)

To KarlTh : I forgot to state but the Salt dip is for the external parasites. I was hoping to get API General Cure for the internal parasites.

To ct-death : I dont know.. You see while I can clearly see external parasites, Im just going on a wild guess for internal.
Im still not good at identifying specific signs for internal parasite or worms infection,
The book I refer to has so many same symptoms for so many different diseases, so I just want to get something that clears everything internal.
The Pimafix + Melafix is to prevent bacteria and fungal attacks after the fishes have their parasite removed.

To Everyone : So do I just skip the 'put 1 table spoon per 25 litres' instruction?
I have a same plastic container that is about 30 litres. How much salt do I need to put in then?
Do I have to weight the salt? Or perhaps you can advise in table spoons?
And lastly, how many fishes can I dip in the solution before I have to renew it?

Thanks for the help!

Any visible "Parasites/worms" are almost always planaria/nematodes... or hookworms.

Internal parasites are often "visible" under the skin until the burst out of the skin, but of course there is evidence.

If you have visible "wigglies" (especially in numbers) they amlost have to be planaria IME.

How big are they? How many do you have? When are they being noticed -- Right after lights on, or after feeding? ...or after you do a heavy maintenance (ie. filter clean/heavy gravel vacs/turn the filter off and then on), etc.?

What are the fish symptoms?

Lastly, do the fish eat them?

As for the melafix/pimafix for bacterial/fungal infections, currently you do not have these issues, and as a Med, they will further stress the fish (albiet midely). My 2cw: I would not subject them to any treatments unless you know what you are dealing with.

P.S.
Salt baths will only assist with parasitic infections, which again, if these are not parasitic you are really stressing the fish.

You don't have to renew the solution. It's not like the fish are taking any more than a miniscule amount of salt away with them, and it's not like it can be "exhausted" in some way.

it is common to treat fish for internal parasites. many breeders do it as do some reputable suppliers.
nematodes Are worms unsegmented round worms
Trematodes Are also Worms..flat worms
annelids Are worms...segmented

in these classes you may find some are parasitic.

also there are internal parsites that are protozoa..microscopic Camillanus is a parsitic nematode
capillaria is a parasitic protozoa. both of these are internal parasites that reside in the digestive tract of the fish.

there are many of these and they can reside in the host for quite sometime and appear normal.
usualy some form of stressor causes the fishes immune system to fail or slow and the parsite can them become problematic and gain the upper hand on the host.

while the best delivery method is for the fish to consume the med..a bath of these same meds has proven effective when the fish has stopped eating.

salt dips are not very effective if the parasite is an internal parasite as the parasite is protected by the host .
