I have a 75 gallon fowlr. Saving up for protein skimmer. How can i remove particulates from the water column. I have a sump with normal overflow u-tube. also what would you recommend for phosphate removal. I have brown diatom algae. As always thanks for the great help that you offer. Phil
 
Get a HOB or cannister filter. Use that for mechanical filtration (be sure to clean it once a week, you don't want the bacteria in there) and you could run carbon or phosphate remover when needed.

Water changes every week of about 10%, will help stop diatoms, Are you using a RO/DI unit or de-ionizing unit for tap water? Running carbon will make the water look clearer, but to remove particales you need to use a mechanical filter like Littlepuff said, although it would be better buying a skimmer straight away.
 
unfortunately not using ro yet. purchased a used tank so trying to catch up. charcoal and phosphate remover would be ok to put in the sump????????
 
depending on your sump you can filter there. I have a chamber where the water initial flows over filter pads then on to bioballs. It works pretty good depending on the filter size (ie the particle size range which is trapped by the filter pad)
 
Buy a filter sock for the water to pass through in your sump like WattsD suggested, I just use that and a protien skimmer.
 
I agree with wastememphis, don't get a HOB filter it is just a waste of money.
