Payara

Hello there, I dont know where to post this so I just post it here. Does anyone ever had payara as a petfish? If yes then what suitable tankmate can they go with? Can they go with piranha or pacu? Are they considered as a food fish or a petfish? I have 2 of them and they lived in pond that contain many pacu and piranha, will payara get along or get eaten? :help:

While payara in the wild do grow large, in aquariums they seldom reach larger than 12".
They mysteriously die at 12", some hypothesize due to not being able to recreate its natural habitat (fast flowing river).

My pond are quite deep and has hard flowing water. The filter are big so it pushes water out real strong, very small fish can die from the force of the water, will payara be able to survive these condition? The pacus and piranhas always stay at the bottom of the pond so it has no problem at all, and they are all big in size; pacu's around 1.5-2 feet, piranhas around 1 feet, the two payaras are around 1.5 feet.

If you had 1.5 feet long payara that would be a first in the aquarium hobby.

Why is that? 1.5 feet are normal, some fisherman can even get bigger one than me (3 feet or something) The 1.5 feet payaras I bought not from pet shops, but from fish market where they sold living fish. I thought these fish look great so I bought two. They are not with me right now, Im in different country from them. So no pic until vacation start I wonder how are they doing...

Yes, they do get large in the wild, but i've never heard of one being 1.5 feet long.

In captivity they don't tend to do well, usually dying for do apparent reason at the 12" mark.

Well if they were bought wild, maybe they can grow larger in an aquarium as compared to captive bred?
