I am thinking of starting my first freshwater tank by getting a peacock eel. I am planning on keeping it in a 50 gallon tank. I know to use sand and make hiding spots for the eel. Any information that any one can give me would be great. Please leave any tips you can offer. Thanks -A

A fifty gallon tank will be large enough for them. You have to be careful because they do dig and can cause anything above the sand to collapse(i.e. rocks, driftwood, decorations) . Peacock eels need live or frozen food such as blood worms or black worms, they can not survive on flake food. Some people have had trouble getting them to eat and they starve to death but I have never had a problem with mine. They will reach anywhere from 7-9 inches and don't come out much during the day. I wouldn't keep them with aggressive fish as they are pretty easy-going. If you have a fish that can fit into the eel's mouth then eventually it will most likely get eaten.

Also, if they don't like the water quality, find the tank too small, or there is something wrong with the tank, they will jump out so you need to be sure you have a tightly fitted top and any openings are covered with something.

I have kept multiple peacocks together and I found that they seem to enjoy each others company.

Hope that helps!
