Peacock with "popeye"

I have a sunshine peacock that has developed popeye, and I was wondering what sort of medication I should put in the tank. I can't even remember the last time I had any kind of bacterial infection with my fish. Can popeye develope if a fish injures his eye, or is bacterial that has nothing to do with an injury? He was fine yesterday, but later this afternoon is when I noticed it. It is really puffed out.

It is very difficult to determine the causes so we have to rely on as much data that you can provide as possible to be able to point out the probable causes. Usually, improving water quality will help with its recovery. Is its abdomen also distended? Are the scales protruding?

Tank size is 100 gal. He looks fine otherwise, no protuding scales of distended abdomen. I did a major tank cleaning about a week ago. I moved everything, vaccumed and did a water change. Should I do another water change? The tankmates are various peacocks, an ahli, yellow labs,a nd some brichardis.

I haven't noticed a sulfuric smell when I clean the tank. I keep my tanks really pretty clean, and keep watch for illnesses, wounds, etc. I did a 50% water change today and added some epsom salt to the tank in hopes that it will help with the fluid build up in his eye. I think tomorrow I will go out and get some Maracin(sp?). Is that what I should get? As far as the water parameters go, I haven't tested the water, I know I should do that.

I think what you need to do right now is keep the fish isolated in a small tank and do water changes by as much as 80% daily along with an efficient filtration system. All you need to do at this point is monitor constantly. With very clean water, the situation may actually improve itself without too much intervention by antibiotics or magnesium sulfate. At least, stock some antibiotics such as Maracyn, Maracyn 2 and Kanamycin just in case.
