can i put peat or vermicompost under gravel?
what is the purpose of putting peat under the gravel...
i've read somewhere about dsoing that but don't remember where i red that. :)

Peat's a good idea - I put a (too heavy I think) layer under the gravel in my 10g and the plants are doing really well. It does colour the water and can affect the hardness, so don't use too much.
I don't know about vermicompost, sorry.

The idea is to give the plants some nutrients in a new set up since food/mulm aren't present. More for rooted plants then stem plants. I've used potting soil (VERY thin dusting after soaking in water and removing all the floating bits) with good results too. My first attempt with it I used too much and the plants turned brown and mushy from gravel level down. :(
