well, hello again everyone, i have another question to ask you guys, this time its concerning peat. i have been told that adding peat to you tank will drop your pH. is this statment true, if it is how much, and how would i go about doing this. any help greatly appreciated :bowing:

Yes, peat will drop your PH and overall water hardness to a point.
You can bag it and put it your filter. I'm not sure how much, continue to ask'round, someone can help you with the amounts.

It did nothing for my tank. 1 whole tray full in my canister filter and nothing. My tank is pretty big though.

How long did you leave it in for peat takes time to work (many days).

It does lower Ph and hardness though, the one problem is that at water changes you will be adding very dissimmilar water unless you age it also with peat.

well i have a question, i have a hang over the back, overflow filter, would i just take the peat, plop some in and check my pH daily? by the way, waht is peat exactly i heard it was a dirt and a moss what would i need to use? thanks for your replys

Over a week now. I am treating my water change water with ph minus.

Driftwood might help

Hi racingjason
Have you tried driftwood, its suppose to lower your ph too. :idea2:

I have hi ph in my tab water about 8, so I going to put driftwood to keep it a little bit lower at 7.5

FYI I new to this hobby so, I could be wrong :o

I have 75lbs of driftwood in it too. The ph minus product has got it down to ~7 right now. Shooting for 6.5-6.8 by saturday because it is D-day. (discus day) :)

Peat is Generally, unconsolidated plant material primarily consisting of undecomposed, or only slightly decomposed, organic matter accumulated under water-soaked conditions. More specifically, a layer of organic material containing plant residues that may show little, if any, morphological change and that have accumulated as a result of submergence in water or through being in a very wet environment.

I would say you may have 2 possible problems, what is the Ph of the water the fish are in in the store? If it is high then you will shock them putting them in that low a Ph water in your tank.............Leave the Ph at its point and you will have little problem, the only reason Ph should be messed with is for breeding or reef tanks.

The other problem will be Ph rebound from the Ph minus, it will eventually wear off and the Ph will jump back to its original range, not good for the fish either.

I realize the "ideal ranges for fish are specific" but stable Ph is better than ideal.....
