 Do male fish have to establish a "pecking order" or show who is the most to least dominant in the tank? I have male guppies and I am not sure if they are playing together or if they are serious but they are chasing eachother around alot. They all came from the same tank at the store so I figured they would get along. I thought guppies were peaceful?

My sister used to have 6 male guppies together and they were fine together. I know that rainbowfish, and other schooling fish, need to establish a heirachy within the school but I'm not sure about guppies.

What size tank is it and how many guppies do you have together?

I could be that the tanks small that's causing more aggression.
I would keep an eye on them, if they start getting frayed fins and other damage then you might have to separate them. If you don't see any damage then they should be fine.

The store where I purchased the guppies had probably 30 of them in a ten gallon so they have more room now than they did at the store. They were swimming all over each other in the store. To be honest I figured they were all related since they are all the same size and came from the same tank but, I cant be sure.

I agree :iagree: with the above comments. The tank may be a bit small for all males. I do know that many fish that school will want to establish a pecking order, and I've also read that having too many males and not enough females (or none at all) can cause aggression.

I dont think they are actully hurting eachother. They aren't actually bitting eachother - I think it's all for show. Kinda like dogs when they establish dominance. A lot of growling, wrestling and teeth showing but, no actual damge is being done. To be honest it looks like they are playing. Do fish "play" with eachother?
