So the other day I got some Knight Gobies for my 29G BioCube. The guy at the LFS said they are acclimated to freshwater but I added a lil bit of salt to my tank anyway. Now here is the weird thing. The Gobies like to live in the pump well of my BioCube. I take them out and they head straight for the pump well and jump in. I've done it several times now. Both of the Gobies do this. What gives? I might have to put them in a different tank.

That is very strange.

Here is one problem.

Despite being acclimated to fresh water, they are not full freshwater fish and cannot survive in it forever. They will not thrive, and they will sicken and show severe stress and eventually die.

Regular aquarium salt is no good in this situation. You need marine salt, such as Instant Ocean to create a BW environment, and you need to measure and monitor your salinity with a refractometer or a hygrometer.

I would assume that the fish are feeling stressed and that is why they are choosing to hide in a dark enclosed environment.

I agree with K, Knight Gobies are strictly brackish fish. They just won't do in freshwater.

As for why they would jump into the pump well, I don't know, it's certainly strange since Gobies aren't the type of fish that jump. One random theory would be that they see it as an "escape route".

I would put the knight gobies in a different tank, a low end brackish tank. I have a pair of knights and they used to hide on odd places. It took them quite a while to adjust to their "home" and it was brackish water. Now that they are comfortable, they are quite active and rarely hide. I think if you were to create a brackish environment for the gobies, you would notice them hiding a lot less. They're such an interesting fish, it would be a shame never to see them out.
