Just curious... Have any of you guys actually "interviewed" or met them before you decided to use them? I know some doctors are better than others, but for the most part, they all know the same stuff. I figure if I don't like them after the first appt. I will just go to someone else the next time. Am I way off?!!? I'm due in a couple of months and was just warned that I better get one soon

This is what my wife and I are thinking as well. We did ask around though and got recommendations. I figure there's nothing I'm going to really figure out from interviews.

My wife and I did interview potential pediatricians before our first child was born..I am glad we did...we went with who we felt comfortable with..looked for a doctor that was approachable, accessible, good common sense, good sense of humor....we have been with the same guy for 17 years now....

We interviewed peditricians as well. And we're still with the one we picked 5 years later! Keep in mind too, that you should have one picked before you give birth because the hospital will ask you who your pediatrician is, and they will call that doctor's office when you have your baby. The doctor, or another doctor from their office, will come to the hospital to check your baby out before you leave.

I strongly recommend finding one beforehand... in those first two weeks, you will be in NO MOOD to be trying to track down a pediatrician before the baby's 2 week checkup!

:D

I didnt persainally interview my daughters pediatrican, however I did get lots of references, and asked lots of questions about the one that I chose from ppl that also used her. I think its better to find out what kind of job they do than what kind of job they talk about doing.

It's good to interview ahead of time. Have you got recommendations from friends or family?

We didn't bother with a pediatrician, our family doctor provides all our care, but that was typical for where we were living at the time. Now we live in a community where a lot of families go to a pediatrician. We didn't bother though...still find it easier to have everyone in the family see the same doctor...especially when we're all sick with the same thing. :)

Mishi, I decided some years ago to do the same thing. I go to a family practice physician, rather than go to a general physician, and a gyno, and have to make appointments for both each year, and pay for extra appointments each year... plus all my records are in one place!
Course, I have two dentists, soon to be three...didn't like my general dentist, so I'm changing. :D

It's tough finding a doctor that is a good "fit" for the family here (Alberta). I've moved a number of times, and because there is a shortage of doctors, you can't be too choosey...although, with universal health care, we aren't restricted with which doctor we see and how often. But I find it even harder to change dentists! Our extended health (private coverage...dental is not covered under universal health) only covers so many "new patient" dentist visits in a year, so I feel stuck with whomever I choose, whether they're a good fit or not. I hate choosing a new detist so much, that I've gone 2 years (when we moved) since my last visit! Finally put the effort into finding one, and have an appointment this week. :)

I am a good hour away from my family and friends, so they won't help much recommending someone, unfortunately. Plus the only neighbor around me that has any kids are nuts and I won't talk to them :o !!

I haven't been told anything like that, I assumed my delivering doctor/the hospital would do that!!

I have considered the family doctor thing. My husband and I both really liked a woman we were going to when we first moved to the area. I switched places only because I didn't like the hospital they delivered at.
